Wheat

At the beginning of the covid pandemic in 2020 people took to feeding birds using seeds that contained anything and everything. One of the everything was wheat grass and it grows on the garden borders in St John’s Churchyard. It’s rather beautiful.

Walking past a tatty pet shop one day I spied a tiny kitten through the window. He was in a tiny cage and desperately trying to escape. I went into the shop and boy was he loud! The shop owner asked £65 for him and they got it. I’d have paid more just to get him away from there. They told me he was eight weeks old but his eyes were still blue so I guessed his age as nearer six weeks. His official birthday was declared 1st May 2009.

A few months ago he began displaying signs of dementia and in the past few weeks his behaviour began to endanger him. I decided to let him go while he still had dignity to retain.

He died peacefully on 22 November 2024 after a morning of fish fingers and favourite treats. A long and glorious life well lived.
